The Sulovari Family came to America in 1999 from Albania; in hopes of finding better education for their two sons. “It was a huge transition, we had no support and we did not know anyone. In Albania family would do everything together, in America, it was just us…and we did not speak any English,” shared Andi Sulovari the youngest son. Andi and his family connected with North Coast Health in 2010. Andi would accompany his father to all office visits, as his father’s translator for appointments due to the language barrier; Andi’s father did not speak any English, “My father ‘always felt in good hands,’ even though he did not understand the language”
When his father was hospitalized a few years ago, Andi was reminded of all the challenges with communication and barriers between providers and patients, especially for those that English was a second language. He, again, held the role as his father’s advocate and translator – and through this experience, decided to go on to school to work in the medical field. He attended Baldwin Wallace College, and currently the University of Findlay. Andi will graduate in December 2015, as a Physician’s Assistant (PA).
Today, Andi is at North Coast Health to obtain needed clinical hours as he readies to graduate. This time, he is seeing North Coast Health as a care provider instead of as a family advocate. Andi shares an insight of the population that he has met here at North Coast Health “most of the patients that come to NCH are underprivileged…they don’t have many resources…they don’t come unless they need it…they are in distress and need help.” Even though his role has changed, he still shares that “the staff is so caring and compassionate…it has always been an amazing experience to be at North Coast Health.”
Andi knows first-hand the challenges of being an immigrant in America. He shares the compassion and desire to serve others. We celebrate Andi for the journey he has taken – and the road leading him to care for others.
