To lose one’s sight would be a crushing blow to anyone. That is exactly what could have happened to Susanna Graley had she not been a patient of North Coast Health.
Susanna was working as a bartender after losing her employer-sponsored health coverage along with her job of 16 years in banking. She was worrying about her husband, wondering how we would get the medical attention needed for his chronic conditions, and struggling with all the other facets of being under-employed when one of her customers told her about North Coast Health.
With a family history of heart disease and undiagnosed high blood pressure and diabetes, David Graley struggled to keep his health in check. After coming to North Coast Health, he began a health maintenance routine, which has kept his symptoms under control. Through our patient assistance program, he now receives the medications he needs at little or no cost.
“It feels like we’re part of a family,” says David. “There is a genuine smile on Dr. Tomsik’s face when he comes in the exam room. It’s like the staff has known us for years. I cannot say enough good things about the people there.”
Shortly after she and her husband became NCH patients, Susanna suffered a torn retina. She was able to get an immediate referral to Cleveland Clinic Ophthalmology/Lakeland Eye in Lakewood, where a doctor performed surgery on her eye the following day. Susanna owes her eye health and possibly her sight to the kindness of the specialists that donated their care so expediently.
Both Susanna and David have had their share of medical challenges, but since coming to North Coast Health, they have been able to get their health under control and receive the medications, specialist referrals and surgeries they have needed.
The Graleys have owned their home and lived in our community for years and never knew about the services North Coast Health provides. Susanna has become a one-woman advertisement, telling everyone she meets who complains about lack of health care that North Coast Health is “the place to go.”
“After losing both our jobs and having health worries, it’s the only right thing that has happened in years,” she says. “I don’t know where we’d be without it.”
